The Life Skills program, funded by the United Way, is in actuality a component of the Work Adjustment Training Program. The Life Skills component was developed to empower deaf and hard of hearing clients, to transition them from a state of dependency to a life of independence and self-support. Mastery of skills such as cooking, cleaning, washing, budgeting, shopping, interpersonal communication (amongst peers and community), and utilization of Deaf Action Center services (with particular emphasis on interpreting and service coordination) are of primary focus. The ultimate goal of the program is for participants to acquire and maintain a living arrangement with minimal or no assistance.
