Because the Deaf Community is a cross section of the community-at-large, there are those that are genetically predisposed to conditions such as addictive disorders. Understanding the language and cultural barriers, the Deaf Action Center in conjunction with the Office for Addictive Disorders is providing counseling and inpatient treatment for those persons experiencing chemical addiction. Weekly counseling sessions and AA meetings are held at the Deaf Action Center. Should an evaluation reveal that more intense therapy be warranted, clients are referred to the Pines Treatment Center for a designated period of time to acquire knowledge, resolve issues, establish a firm foundation, and initiate a life of sobriety.
